Known by some as a “magic carpet”, we designed this 8’ mini-tanker
for a small-statured long-boarder that wanted a catch-anything,
full-volume longboard experience in a size he could maneuver easily. The
Steamer has a classic long-board nose in an eight-foot package.
This
board carries it’s thickness far forward, offsetting a super-wide squash
tail that virtually guarantees you’ll catch every wave you paddle for.
While it’s perfect for beginner surfers, it also makes a great big-guy
board for those transitioning from logs to shorter boards. The
two-plus-one fin setup and hardened tail offers the more advanced
surfers a board they can enjoy in hollower waves, where full-size
long-boards just don’t fit. Gently curving hips help this board sweep
through turns like a dream, while the wider, thicker nose begs for you
to cross-step forward.
Every Grain Home Grown Surfboard kit comes with all the components
that go into the board including machine-cut keel and frames, top and
bottom planks, rail strips, fin box, glue, epoxy, fiberglass, mixing
buckets, gloves, instruction manual, etc. These kits are designed to be
built by anyone with the room to to do it. Previous wood working
experience is helpful, but not necessary. All you need is the ability to
follow written directions and a little patience.

you’ll need are not included in the kit – but most of it should be
available locally. Hand tools, supplies and fins are available here in
the store as well. The included manual shows how to make a simple rocker
table from basic materials you can salvage or obtain locally.
A rocker
table helps form the board to the correct rocker. It also helps to have a
4 to 6 bar clamps for assembling the top and bottom planks, but simple
wood wedges could be used as well.
