Here is the story of Wave Tribe and Ashley:
On our first visit to Santa Cruz we visited a really cool surf shop called Paradise Surf. This is a shop on the east side of town and it’s geared towards female surfers. Paradise has stuff for guys too, plenty of surfboards on consignment and a really cool vibe. While we were there we noticed a very nicely shaped Bio Foam board. Christa the super sweet shop girl informed us that this board was shaped by Santa Cruz local, Ashley Lloyd. The name sounded familiar, and Christa told us we might be interested in contacting Ashley to see how we might be able to help each other out since we seemed to be like minded. We called Ashley but she was in Maui surfing and enjoying the weather. We proceeded to visit other awesome shops in the area: Arrow Surf Shop (on the west side), and Nor Cal (in Pacifica).
Well, a week later we travelled back up to Santa Cruz for ASRA. After sitting at our booth for two days, we got a call from Ashley Lloyd. She was returning from Maui and was trying to figure out how to get from the Oakland Airport back to SC. We offered her a ride considering we would be up in San Francisco visiting Jessie over at FreeBord (snowboarding in the streets). We had never met Ashley before we saw her at the airport, and we were jazzed to see she was traveling with a guitar in hand. Turns out, not only does Ashley Lloyd shape awesome surfboards, shred the surf with style, but she also writes killer songs and has a lovely voice.
We arrived back at Ashley’s house which was a block away from Pleasure Point. We stayed up half the night jamming and laughing. The next morning we got the chance to surf Pleasure with Ashley. I rode a pink 9’2 that she shaped out of a sugar blank. It was a great session and I was immediately sold on her shape. Ashley surfs with grace and style, she grew up surfing Malibu, she’s a goofy foot and her switch stance is something to see. As we reluctantly left for home, she kicked us down a copy of her upcoming album which was equally graceful as her surfing. Whether she’s shaping boards for BING, teaching people how to surf, putting her toes on the nose, or playing shows, Ashley puts her soul into it. - Seth
Dr. Scott Paynton & Mike Conway (Surfrider)
We are proud to announce two new team riders to the Wave Tribe movement; Mike Conway, Director of Development for the Santa Barbara chapter of the Surfrider Foundation and Dr. Scott Paynton, Professor of Communications at Humboldt State University.
Mike and Scott are avid surfers and cyclists, and are embarking on a wonderful journey and opportunity this May bicycling and surfing their way down the coast of California to surf in an environmentally friendly way.
Through the journey, they hope to bring attention to others regarding the many environmental issues that face our coast. They will be self-sufficient on their trip, meaning they will carry all of their gear and tow their boards behind their bikes (in Wave Tribe Hemp Bags of course!).
Wave Tribe is helping to sponsor this great adventure, a journey of awareness and education while these Wave Tribe Team Riders also help to raise money for the American Cancer Society by participating in Humboldt County's Relay for Life event.

In hindsight, I’m grateful to my parents for not buying me stuff as a kid. “Make it” was their stock response when I asked for something. So my buddies and I would get jazzed on skateboarding or skim boarding or surfing, scour construction sites for materials, then head to my basement and have at it.
The “make it” ethic has stuck in my head until this day, as well as the impulse to use whatever materials are beggable, stealable, reusable, or recyclable. Disposable surfboards were never an idea that sat very well with me, so in the late ‘90s I began shaping my own from stripped-down yard sale finds and garage dust-collectors. They worked and people called. I made more. I discovered one of the most sustainable approaches to board building is to make boards that will last a long time.
I shape each board with an eye on its carbon footprint. I use TDI-free foams made from organic materials. They’re strong and light and flexible, and they look damn good when my glasser Leslie Anderson has her way with them. More importantly, they’ll be around for a while. You can see some of my work at my blog:

Wave Tribe is a crucial step in both our awareness and our actions. When I met D-Dog for the first time in Baja, I knew he was committed to our responsibility as environmental stewards. He lives what he believes, and Wave Tribe lives as a result. The guy rips, too!
Happy surfing,

Eduardo Havana, Cuban Surfing Association
I have had the fortune in my life to travel all over the world in search of waves and as part of my travels I like to surf uncharted areas. I had the opportunity to visit Cuba and while doing so I met up with the official Cuban Surfing Association started by an Australian Mate that fell in love with these incredible people and its culture.
Upon arriving I met up with Eduardo, we instantly became amigos, surfing with Eduardo and his friends in Cuban is one of the highlights of my travels across the globe---we walked for miles barefoot along the concrete Havana jungle, jumping fences and dodged lava rocks to find waves scattered along empty shores. It's one thing to share a common bond in surfing but we also found that both of us had a passion for shaping, I felt like I had found a long lost Cuban brother and our friendship continues.
I hope one day Eduardo and I can paddle out together at my home break, but until then I keep sending he and his friends surf equipment so that they can remain stoked on surfing in a country that is full of human potential but short on freedom.
Wave Tribe is proud to sponsor the Cuban Surfing Association and other surfers worldwide that share our common tribe, our bond, and our desire to surf great waves and protect the oceans and each other.

Wave Tribe Sponsors Surfclass
Surfclass is widely regarded as one of the best places to learn to surf on the entire West Coast. Students come from around the world to take part in our one-of-a-kind summer camps and lessons, where they learn to surf from friendly, knowledgeable instructors who truly care about sharing the “stoke” of surfing. Whether you're interested in summer surf camps, private or group lessons, or a corporate outing to stoke out your staff, Surfclass is ready to make it happen.
As surfers, we are keenly in tune with the subtle changes that occur in the ocean and at the beach. Whether we’re looking at the perfect west swell at a point break, watching sandbars melt under the power of a winter storm or noticing something funky floating in the water, we see the ocean as a living entity – and where the ocean meets land, a delicate environment.
Surfclass and Wave Tribe are seriously commitment to the environment. Each year Surfclass participates in local beach cleanups and they regularly engage in water testing efforts. Surfclass supports local nonprofits like 4-H Club, Surfrider Foundation and the Groundswell Society. They’re also a member of 1% For the Planet, an organization that allows them to commit 1% of every dollar they make to nonprofit organizations that promote ocean conservation, restoration and education.
