Welcome to the 2022 Airline Surfboard Boardbag Fee Guide For Surfers.

Every year we contact all the airlines and find out how much they are going to charge us for taking along our sleds to far-away destinations.

I got sick of getting burned by the airlines and wanted to do something about it so the team and I created this list of baggage fees from different airlines. If you help us out in keeping it up to date, that would be awesome. (together we are stronger).

We do this as a service to you, the traveling surfer.

Things Get Real With Slater Onboard

Slater and Hurley Executive took on Hawaiian Airlines in the fight and we moved them down to Kook status. Kelly Slater, so bluntly stated, is "a ridiculous and default profit racket" to describe Hawaiian Airline's fee structure. 

A few other pro surfers joined in on the discussion:

Freddy Patacchia Jr: Over the past 15 years I've tried my best to NOT fly Hawaiian Air due to their board fees. A good alternative for me has been American Air, $150per board bag (multiple boards) as long as it's under the weight limit.

Sebastian Zietz: @hawaiianairlines bring the aloha back! No other airline has this regulation #kooks

Zeke Lau: @hawaiianairlines is blown!!!! No other Airline makes you limit the number of boards in a board bag. I do everything I can to avoid traveling on @hawaiianairlines for this very reason. Something needs to change!

Granger Larsen: It is so true. I don't even take @hawaiianairlines anywhere because of their surfboard policy. What we have to deal with spending all this money all year just for tickets then to spend almost just the same amount for our surfboards to get on is ridiculous.

Surfer Friendly Bro Airline - FREE

Most of the following airlines include a surfboard as part of your regular bag allowance and they allow that sled fly for FREE.

These are our preferred 'surfer friendly bro' airlines and we highly recommend that you travel with them.

You might have to pay a little more to book your ticket but it's better than paying an extra $400 to $600 to take your quiver both ways.

There are a few airlines that charge a nominal fee for your boardbag. I don't mind paying that . . . free is better but nominal is almost as good.

I have been flying Alaska to Cabo and Sinaloa (see our surf travel guides for Cabo and Sinaloa for awesome surfing travel tips) for the last few years and they charge between $50-$75 boardbag, slowly inching up the price.

You Kinda Suck Airline - Over $100

The following is the list of 'you kinda suck' airlines and they charge over $100 each way, which in this day and age doesn't seem that bad but still kinda sucks cause all those golf dudes usually get their clubs on for free.

**In January, I flew American to Kauai and they charged me $125 each way for one surfboard.

The following is the list of 'kook' airlines who charge over $150 each way—nobody likes a kook in the water and especially one that is taking money from your pocket.

Daddy Warbucks Money - Over $200

The following is the list for surfers that have 'Daddy Warbucks Money'. Unfortunately, I've been caught by both Swiss Air and Thai Air personally. On Thai Air, I had three boards in my bag coming back from Bali ($150 x 3) and they charged me some ridiculous tax on top of the $450.

Can you imagine?

I will NEVER fly Thai Air again and I hope that this list will prevent you from getting caught with your pants down.

• This fee is charged each-way on outbound and return journeys.

Notes

• Please contact the Reservations Department in order to book your bags in advance.
• Please note that Surfboards must not exceed 2.77m in length (approx. 110 inches). They must be packed in cushioning material such as bubble wrapping to protect them against damage. On Aer Lingus Regional flights, surfboards must not exceed 2.05m (approx. 80 inches).
• There is no charge for surfboards for passengers traveling in Business class.
• Surfboards are considered as part of the standard baggage allowance on flights operating to/from North America. Regular rates will apply if it exceeds your baggage limit.
• There is a limit in allotted space for sports equipment on regional flights so be sure to check in before your flight to see if there's enough space for your board.

• They allow up to 2 boards and up to 3 sets of fins.

Notes:

• The additional piece of free checked baggage to carry surfing or diving equipment is assigned when checking in for the flight. It is not counted when calculating fares for the carriage of excess baggage and is not designated in the ticket.

• One board or one bag containing a surfboard counts as one piece of baggage towards the maximum number of checked bags allowed by your fare type. You will be charged a flat fee of $100 CAD/USD. Please note that only ONE board is allowed - TWO handling fees will be charged if 2 boards are packed in the same bag.
• Two handling fees apply for two (2) surfboards packed in the same container.
• Boards must not exceed 115 inches / 292 cm in length
• Must not exceed 24 inches / 60 cm in width
• Must not exceed: 32 kg / 70 lb in weight

Notes:

• Surfboards are accepted on a space available basis only. You need to register your sports equipment at least 24 hours before your flight because they only allow limited space for special items. Registering does not guarantee a slot for your equipment either but it's better to try than to be left surprised at check-in, right?
• Air Canada is not liable if and to the extent that any damage results from the inherent defect, quality or vice of the baggage.
• Surfboards must be packed in hardshell containers or in soft-sided containers. Otherwise, Air Canada will provide a plastic transport bag. Fins must be removed from the board.

• If surfboard is less than 107 cm / 42 inches in length and less than 23 kg / 50 lb in weight, there is no extra charge in your baggage allowance if it is the only baggage that you want to check in (or one out of the 2 baggage items allowed for the Business and La Première cabins.)
• If surfboard is between 107 and 300 cm in length with a maximum weight of 23 kg / 50 lb, including the container, transporting equipment is not included in your baggage allowance. At the airport, you need to pay an additional charge that varies based on the geographical zones (zones 1 - 5):
• Zone 2 - €65 ($75) on flights departing from a country outside Europe
• Zone 4 - €125 on departures from a country within the European zone (175 CAD on departures from Canada, 150 USD on departures from all other countries)
• Zone 5: €100 on departures from a country within the European zone (120 CAD on departures from Canada, 100 USD on departures from all other countries)
• If your baggage exceeds the maximum weight limit, you need to pay for an additional baggage

• Surfboards and longboards need prior approval from their customer service department. You must submit a request at least 48 hours before your flight's departure.

• I have always had a great experience flying with Alaska. One of the most friendly surfer airlines I have flown. We are allowed to fly with two surfboards inside one board bag.
• Surfboards must be properly packed in a soft- or hard-sided case designed specifically for the equipment.

Notes:

• Baggage with total linear dimensions (length, width, height) which exceed 292 cm or weight over 45 kg per piece will not be accepted as checked baggage.

• For any sports equipment, the maximum linear size (length + width + height) is 126 in / 320 cm, and the maximum weight is 70 lbs / 32 kgs, subject to the airplane size and available cargo space.
• Standard checked bag fees of your destination apply up to 50lbs/23kgs and 126in/320cm (length + width + height)
• $150 fee applies from 51lbs/23kgs to 70lbs/32kgs
• 1 bag or case can contain multiple boards and will count as 1 checked item. Keels, kedges, and/or fins must be removed or properly protected to prevent damage to other bags.

Notes:

• For travel to, through or from Brazil, for tickets issued on or before May 20, 2019, the fee will be $42.50 for 1st board bag/case and $85 for 2+ board bags/cases.

Additional Notes:

• 10/2022 - Wave Tribe bro, T, said, "Last week, I found out that American Airlines will NOT reimburse any board or bag damage UNLESS it's a HARD case. Even then, only if there is visible damage on the hard case itself. From San Diego to El Salvador, the soft bag was punctured and the tail was crushed. Sorry, no claim possible. In short, all soft bags are not claimable. The terms and conditions are deep down in their website somewhere. Under 50 lbs, it's $30 check-in fee. Mine was 8'6, so I can't vouch for any length limit."
